Iceland - Day by Day
In April 2018, a friend and I went on our first trip together to discover the beautiful South and Western side of Iceland. Over the course of the seven days, we travelled by ourselves and public transport through some of the most breath-taking landscapes and scenery I had ever seen. In this article you’ll find a little summary about this journey and links to related articles located on the website.
To give you an idea about the island, Iceland is a Nordic country in the North Atlantic with a population of approx. 360,000 and an area of 103,000 square metres, making it the most sparsely populated country in Europe. It is no exaggeration to say that Iceland is volcanically and geologically active. The interior of the country consists in a plateau characterized by sand and lava fields, mountains, and glaciers, and many amazing glacial rivers flow to the sea through the lowlands.
Day 1: Reykjavik
We left Copenhagen in the afternoon and after a quick flight with Wow Air we landed in Reykjavik. We purchased Airport Direct tickets and drove towards Kex Hostel where we checked in before heading towards a friend’s French restaurant called the Bistrot.
Day2: The South Coast
South Coast trip with Yourdaytours company. It was an amazing and exhausting day that we completed with a meal from the Icelandic fast food Aktu Taktu, a beer in the hostel’s common room and a night out in Lebowski Bar.
Day3: Hitchhiking in Iceland
It was time to head North towards Olafsvik. After different busses and hours of hitchhiking we made it to the Snæfellsjökull national park and our Air B&B in Grundafjördur. Check out the article I wrote about hitchhiking in Iceland!
Day4: Whale watching
After a unforgettable whale watching moment with Lakì Tours it was time to leave this part of Iceland to hitchhike our way towards Reykholt. This day almost didn’t go as planned, and after hitchhiking in the wrong way and walking in the dark through the Þingvellir National Park, we made it to the guesthouse, exhausted and tearing up. It is definitely worth a read.
Day 5: Tomatoes and thermal bathing
After a delicious lunch at Fridheimar Tomato Green house, we explored the nature around Reykholt before heading towards the Secret Lagoon and its geothermic baths. Finally we hitchhiked back towards Reykjavik and checked in Kex Hostel one last time.
Day 6: The golden circle
Mountaineers of Iceland took us on the Golden Circle and to ride snow mobiles on glaciers. This day was both intense and magical. We then had dinner at the Icelandic Street Food before heading towards our beds for our last sleep in Iceland.
